Special Thanks
A Special thanks to these international companies and organizations for providing us such a wonderful array of free or at least very cheap software. Also, we must not forget all the volunteers around the world, helping make the open source software movement work.
RedHat Linux 6.2 is our core network operating system.
Samba is the package we use to let Windows talk the Linux file servers.
Squid and SquidGuard
is our choice for the Internet proxy/filter.
Apache is our choice for the
St. Francis Intranet web server.
KDE is our default desktop
environment.
Sun's
StarOffice product is our choice of complete office suite software.
Some additional learning software that we use includes:
ktouch typing training.
kard based on the "memory" game.
kalcul math drills.
khangman based on the classic hangman game.
gcompris teach children starting at 3 how to use a mouse and keyboard.
Early this school year (2001-2002) we plan on adding more free linux software to the school system including:
(if everyone approves)
TuxTyping another typing training.
Xletters type the falling words before they hit the bottom of your screen.
Lincity - is a city/country simulation game very similar to SimCity.
Freeciv multiplayer strategy game that is comparable with Civilization II. Teach the older kids how to use various resources to accomplish certain goals.
kpacman It's a classic.
Other additions to our network will include:
A faster backup server to replace stfran3 (nis, nfs and intranet server) and stfran6 (squid-squidGuard server) thanks to a local bank and some scrape parts from my work. Anyone running a Microsoft based network will laugh, but our new FASTER server is a P166 with 64 meg ram. Try doing that with NT!
We will also add the following services to our network--all free thanks to linux:
Internal e-mail for training the kids about e-mail without the worry of something from the internet bothering them.
Time synchronization to keeps all workstations on time..we are using some very old equipment and in a networked environment, this can be a problem.
Here's another dig at you-know-who, since the Linux servers were put into service in March 2001, they have been up and we have done nothing to them except update the user database and squidGuard filter. Period.
Back Home.
